BRIGHTON trainer Gary White admitted he had to convince one of his prominent stable clients not to sack three-year-old filly Suwerte after she produced two forgettable performances at her only two starts.

Suwerte *Clangalang-Corryong) was bred by Barry Cooper who told White he wasn’t interested in keeping Suwerte in work after she finished last on debut at Devonport, beaten over 60 lengths and followed uh a near last effort in Hobart two weeks ago when she ran off on the home turn.

“We took her to Devonport for her debut and I backed her but she ran so far last she didn’t even beat the ambulance home,” White said.

“Then we backed her up at Elwick and she ran off on the home turn.”

“Barry (Cooper) was going to pull the pin but somehow I managed to convince him that she does have ability and that we should persevere.”

“On her trackwork she had to win races because she has worked with another of mu horses Ollie’s Gold and she beat him so we knew she had ability.”

Apprentice Bulent Muchu also played a hand in the filly being given another chance.

“Bulent (Muchu) rides in her trackwork and he said that if she got to the front she wouldn’t let another horse beat her home and she proved that today,” White said.

Suwerte ($14.80) began well from a middle gate and led but she was pressured by the odds-on favourite Streetwise Savoire ($1.30) 600m from home.

But when Muchu called on his filly to extend at the top of the home straight she moved clear and went on to score by almost two lengths from Streetwise Savoire with his stablemate Buzzing Away ($15.30) three-quarters of a length away third.
