Tasmanian bred horses have shone in the national spotlight these past few months with The Cleaner and Like a Carousel winning quality races on the mainland.
On Sunday a Tasmanian bred horse won a Listed race in New Zealand to further emphasize the depth of quality being bred in this state.
Mongolian Khan, a 3YO colt by Holy Roman Emperor (IRE) – Centafit (NZ), by Centaine (AUS), scored an impressive win in the Jesters’ Pies Salver Guineas Prelude (LR) at Ellerslie on Sunday.
The colt was bred by Tasmanian Hall of Fame breeder Graeme McCulloch’s at his Grenville Stud and was offered for sale at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale where he was purchased for NZ $140,000
Mongolian Khan was smartly away, went straight to the lead and settled comfortably in front, being permitted to set a very moderate tempo.
He sprinted clear turning for home and went on to win by 1-1/2 lengths and was right at home over the 2100-metre trip.
“I decided to send the colt to New Zealand as he is the half brother to Wellington Cup winner Young Centaur (x Jeune) and I was very pleased with the result,” McCulloch said.
Tasmanian has always had a reputation for breeding tough stayers and this has been further strengthened by the results of The Cleaner, Queenstown, Like a Carousel, Kenjorwood, Bunchloch, Lucks a Fortune, Happy As Hell and now Mongolian Khan.
For tough, good value horses look no further than the 2015 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale to be held at the Inveresk Showground in Launceston on 12 February 2015.
