The Angela Brakey-trained White Hawk makes his interstate debut at Caulfield Saturday when he lines up in a benchmark 80 handicap (race 2) over 2400m.
White Hawk comes off a ninth in the Ladbrokes Launceston Cup but that should be ruled out as a form indicator as he was never close enough to the main body of the field to make an impact.
The rain-affected track conditions also didn’t suit, evidenced by him not stretching right out at any stage of the race.
If the rain stays away and he gets a good four-rated track, then he becomes a top each-way chance.
At his previous outing he was an impressive winner of the Armidale Stud Night Cup over 2100m in Launceston.
“Everything will depend on how he handles the trip across Bass Strait, and we don’t need the track to be any worse than a soft 5,” Brakey said.
“The horse goes over tonight (Thursday) and he will be stabled at Caulfield and we have Dwayne Dunn booked to ride him.”
Later in the program champion Tasmanian sprinter-miler Hellova Street will attempt to win his third race on Victorian soil when he tackles a quality handicap (race 8) in which he will carry top weight of 59kg.
The Scott Brunton-trained nine-year-old won the Ladbrokes Stakes (1200m) three starts back before finishing second to his stablemate Mandela Effect in weight-for-age races over 1400m and 1600m with the latest over 1600m in Launceston.
The gelding ran second this time last year at Flemington (March 16) over 1400m, and he is quoted as second favourite on Saturday at $4.80 behind odds-on chance Admiral’s Joker ($1.80).
