Two meetings were staged last week in Hobart and Launceston with the win of Cool Water Paddy in the Launceston Mile being the stand-out performance of the weekend.
Yesterday Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein announced that racing in Tasmania across all codes will cease for at least the next four weeks, further details can be found on the tasracingcorporate.com.au website.
The Stars
Cool Water Paddy – announced his arrival at the state’s highest level with a dominant win in the Launceston Mile. The gelded son of Ohoka Arizona was able to lead before handing up in the early stages, driver Ricky Duggan elected to race outside the leader from the 900-metre mark and he ran away late to score by 11.9-metres and was in-fact eased up on the line. The win was the Juanita McKenzie’s-trained pacers 10th career win at only his 14th start.
Written In Silk – started an easing favourite in the Launceston Belmont for the two-year-old fillies but she was too classy for her rivals after racing outside the leader to win impressively by 9.7-metres with Mark Yole in the sulky. The Sportswriter filly was on debut from the Ben Yole stable after being purchased from last year’s Carrick Park Yearling Sale by Anthony Bullock and Jess Campbell.
Estelle – was first-up from a long spell but proved too good for her rivals when she led all the way to score in the Longford Equine Clinic Stakes. It was a well-rated drive in front by Charlie Castles with the pacer trained by his uncle John, who races the horse in partnership with Charlie’s father, Michael. There’s no doubt the connections were pleased to walk away with their $10,000 Tasbred Bonus on top of the first prize cheque.
Class Tells – has been racing extremely well of late and on Sunday night she recorded her third win of the season. The Brian Mackrill-trained mare recorded a narrow victory in a rating 51 to 53 event with Todd Rattray in the sulky.
Dyslexic – after three-second placings, the Kate Hargreaves-trained pacer broke through for an overdue win. Hargreaves had been campaigning the gelded son of Sweet Lou in the state over the Autumn Carnival where he finished second in the Tasmanian Derby.

Trial File
Launceston – Sunday evening
Trial 1 – Bridwood Bella worked forward to take up the lead before handing up to Lalasa soon after the start. Trainer-driver Rohan Hadley was able to angle the Auckland Reactor filly into the clear at the 100-metre mark to sprint away and score by 1.2 meters over Lalasa with Sweet Luck hitting the line nicely under a strong-hold by driver Kyle Pratten for third, after enjoying a soft run four back along the marker pegs.
The mile rate for 1680 metres was 2m 6.2s with the last half mile recorded in 60.2s.
Trial 2 – Big Mischief worked forward to race outside the leader and was able to cling on to a short half-head victory over Jakes A Joy who enjoyed a soft run three-back the marker pegs and was inclined to over race during the middle stages. When driver Troy McDonald got the pacer into the clear at the top of the home straight the pacer ran on well under a nice hold, with McDonald clearly showing respect to the lower-rated opponents in the trial on the rain-affected track. The early leader Buster Malone was a further 5.8-metres away third.
The mile rate for 1680 metres was 2m 8.2s with the last half mile registered in 61.2s.
Trial 3 – was a standing start affair with the three runners rating between 48 and 79 all starting off the front mark. Beau Garcon stepped away cleanly to lead with Reign Of Pain settling in second spot with Salvator Mundi settling at the tail. Salvator Mundi was eased three-wide by his trainer-driver Mark Yole at the top of the home straight where he went to the line under a nice hold to score by 5.8-metres to defeat Reign Of Pain with Beau Garcon, who was just beaten for speed by his higher-rated pacing rivals late, a further 4.6-metres away.
The mile rate was 2m 5.8s with the last half mile in 58.1s.
