These two stakes winners were both by Tough Speed and certainly lived up to the name. One a consistent mare and the other a versatile stayer who was well travelled throughout his career.

Black ‘N’ Tough

Black ‘N’ Tough defeats GeeGees Blackflash in Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Stakes.

  • Brown Mare
  • 21 starts
  • 13 wins
  • 5 minor placings
  • $285,750 prizemoney
  • First start: March 2012
  • Trainer: Leon Wells

The mare was perhaps often in the shadows of her stablemate Rebel Bride who raced for the same ownership, but she was a quality performer in her own right. Winning five of her first six starts established quickly that she was well above average and eventually she would only miss a placing three times in her 21 start career. She won a mares handicap at Moonee Valley in 2013 and eventually her feature win would come when she won the Newmarket that year and followed with the Listed Tasmanian Stakes later in the same campaign.

Banca Mo

Banca Mo winning in Launceston.

  • Brown Gelding
  • 37 starts
  • 12 wins
  • 12 minor placings
  • $812,640 prizemoney
  • First start: May 2011
  • Trainer: David & Scott Brunton

One of several stars to come out of the Brunton stables at Seven Mile Beach this decade, Banca Mo’s wins ranged from 1100m to 2400m but his sprinting days were certainly early in his career. He was tested on the mainland with six wins next to his name and in his first four starts in Victoria, he didn’t miss the quinella and won at Flemington and Moonee Valley. As his career progressed he became a real cups horse, winning the Pakenham and Warrnambool Cups in 2013, and in 2015 would place in both the Hobart and Launceston Cups before winning the Mornington Cup. He was a terrific earner for connections, placing in more than half his 37 career starts.
