TASMANIA and possibly Australia’s most popular racehorse The Cleaner will attempt to guarantee a start in the Cox Plate by winning the weight-for-age Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes over 1600 metres at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
The Mick Burles-trained seven-year-old scored an impressive win at Moonee Valley at his last outing, a race that helped increase his national cult following owing to his brave catch-me-if-you-can racing style.
The Cleaner was ridden for the first time by Noel Callow at his most recent outing but connections were forced to find a replacement rider after Callow injured his ankle recently.
They have opted for multiple Group 1-winning jockey Steven Arnold.
This promises to be The Cleaner’s toughest assignment over a career that boasts 16 wins from 41 starts for close to $600,000 in stakes.
Burles is confident The Cleaner will be very competitive on Saturday.
