TASMANIA’S equine cult hero The Cleaner was the centre of attention this morning as he prepared for his first fast gallop since winning the JRA Cup at Moonee Valley almost three weeks ago.

The Cleaner has been backed in from 200/1 to 15/1 to win Australasia’s richest and most prestigious weight-for-age race the W. S Cox Plate and his trainer Mick Burles was delighted with his stable star’s trackwork.

Amid a media frenzy at his Longford stables The Cleaner strolled out onto the track and with trackwork rider Karl Rhodes in the saddle the Tasmanian-owned, bred and trained gelding looked good as he worked off from the 1000-metre peg and dashed home his last 400 metres in a slick 22.7 seconds.

“That’s exactly what I was hoping he would do this morning,” Burles said.

“I couldn’t be happier with him. He’s done really well since his JRA Cup win and this gallop was brilliant and he’ll have another strong gallop on Friday and finish off his fast work leading up to the Cox Plate next Tuesday,” Burles said.

The Cleaner will be the first Tasmanian-trained horse to run a Cox Plate.
