WHEN HARNESS racing owner-breeder Matthew Wright decided to breed a foal from a non-performing Tiger Woods mare most of his friends and fellow breeders taunted him and predicted nothing would come of the mating of his mare Lucky Woods with Modern Art.
But Wright had the last laugh when the result of that mating The Pix scored a last-to-first win in the SEW Eurodrive Tasmanian Guineas in Hobart on Sunday night.
The Pix is prepared by Michael Laugher at his Westbury stables in the north of the state.
The gelding went into the race a winner of only one race last season from seven outings but the win was in good company and it was the way the gelded son of Modern Art went about winning that suggested he may have a future.
he had one more start after his two-year-old win for a fifth in Hobart after which he was sent for a spell.
He resumed three months later form a game second with Gareth Rattray aboard in a 3C0-3C1 in Launceston behind the highly promising Estevao.
Laugher opted to book Victorian reinsman Chris Alford and he delivered a top class dive to ensure victory in the Guineas, coming from last to score narrowly from Le Premiere and Mickwillrev.
