Team Wells will take five to the Hobart meeting on Saturday with Dean or Trent to travel three down from Spreyton while the patriarch of the team, Leon, will float two from the Brighton yard.
Leon will saddle up Gee Gee Cloudy Bay in the opening race on the seven-event card, a maiden over 1200m and Gee Gees Doubleyou in the class one handicap (1100m) for what will be her first start since injuring her hip in a race in Hobart almost two years ago.
“I think Gee Gee Cloudy Bay could sneak a place in the opening race, but the jury is still out on that mare,” Leon Wells said.
“I am looking forward to seeing Doubleyou back racing because she possesses good ability but has been off the scene for a long time and will no doubt need the run.
“She is very talented, and it wouldn’t surprise me if she ran a bottler, but she had to start somewhere and this race looked as good as any.”
Gee Gees Doubleyou only had three starts before she was injured in a race in Hobart, the start after she won her maiden impressively in Launceston two years ago to the day.
The Spreyton stable tenants are Miss Enthusiasm in a Tasbred Bonus race over 1100m, Gee Gees Saint Nik in the 1600-metre benchmark 60 and Gee Gee Pureblonde in the class 3 handicap over 1400m.
Trent Wells says all three from his and Dean’s yard are expected to perform well.
“Miss Enthusiasm is in her right race and her last-start third was good enough to suggest she is ready to win,” Trent Wells said.
“Our apprentice Peter Lui will be instructed to ride her forward as that will give her the best chance of winning.
“He rides the other two, but he has instructions to make up his own mind in those races as to how they are ridden.
“Saint Nik has been consistent at the back end of his campaign and he deserves another win and gets into a winnable race.
“Pureblonde is a horse that can be ridden on the speed or from back in the field with the latter my preference, but there is no natural speed in the race, so we will leave it up to Pete (Lui).
“It is the last race of the day so if there is any bias shown from the track we can adjust to suit.”
