PREMIER Tasmania greyhound trainer is no stranger to winning feature races but it seems his record in juvenile Breeders Classics might be better than most.
At Devonport today Medhurst prepared Black Sienna to score an impressive all-the-way victory to give the trainer his 20th Breeders Classic win.
Black Sienna was one of three from the same litter (St Pierre-Wongawilli Wala) to make the Devonport club’s Breeders Classic final with Prescribe (8) the most fancied of the trio starting the $2.40 favourite while Black Sienna was at $5 and the litter sister Demi Cali the outsider of the three at $10.
Black Sienna showed good early speed to share the lead to the top turn but she kicked away turning for home and went on to win by almost two lengths from Buckle Up Fletch with Tax Toy third.
Prescribe and Demi Cali found early trouble and were out of contention by the home turn.
The litter is owned by Debbie Cannan who has shared a great working relationship with Medhurst.
When Medhurst was sidelined Cannan jumped into the breach and held the fort until he returned and since then they have proved to be a formidable combination as trainer and owner.
Cannan trained the sire of the litter, St Pierre, to win an Australian Cup and a Devonport Cup and along the way she has been associated with some brilliant sprinters.
Medhurst has been making a splash nationally this year with his kennel star Buckle Up Wes winning the Australian Cup in March and last month he won the invitation only Group 1 Topgun at The Meadows.
Tomorrow night he tackles a heat of the Melbourne Cup, drawing box seven in the last of eight heats (race 12).
Connections of Buckle Up Wes are not concerned with the box draw but they would have preferred an earlier heat.
