The Tasmanian Pacing Club has thrown its weight behind a fundraising appeal that will assist Tasmania’s members of the Australian team that will contest the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Greece later this month.
The 10 Tasmanian members of the Australian team will be at a special function at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday night where about 250 invited guests will attend the race meting and help raise much needed travelling funds for the members of the team.
The TPC will provide all the food for the function as well as provide some donations and assist the team to raise funds through the night through raffles and other fundraising activities.
The Special Olympic World Summer Games will be held in Athens, Greece, from June 24 to July 4 and it will be the largest event in the world in 2011.
Team Australia will consist of 130 athletes and 40 officials.
The team members will compete in 11 sports – aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, football, golf, gymnastics, sailing, softball and tennis.
Athletes from Australia have competed at the Special Olympic World Games since 1983 when just eight athletes represented Australia in athletics and aquatics at the sixth International Special Olympics Summer Games at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA.
