SO strong is the number of two-year-old thoroughbreds in work at the moment there is a likelihood that the first two-year-old race scheduled for Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on November 4 could be run in two divisions.
Over 20 two-year-olds have either trialed or had track gallops on the grass in readiness for the opening juvenile race of the season and another half-dozen are set to trial at Longford next Tuesday.
History tells us that the two-year-old numbers can drop away quickly due to shin soreness or other minor juvenile structural issues but there is an optimistic message coming from the trainers this season.
Brighton trainer John Luttrell took three of his two-year-olds to Tattersall’s Park for a gallop on the inside grass this morning (Tuesday) and fellow Brighton mentor Stuart Gandy presented one of his youngsters.
Luttrell hopes at least two of his can race in the coming weeks and Gandy also is confident Gee Gee’s Soprano will step out in the season opener on November 4.
Luttrell presented a gelded son of Clangalang named Geegees Black Fury for this morning’s gallop and he towered over his stablemates.
The Clangalang gelding that already stands at 16 hands, won the gallop from the Gee Gee’s Soprano (Wordsmith-Opera Singer) but both looked impressive as they worked from the 1000-metre peg, quickened at the 600m then dashed up the home straight.
There are two two-year-old races programmed in November and both are at Tattersall’s Park with the second on November 25.
Prominent owners Paul and Elizabeth Geard own al four that galloped today.
The Clangalang gelding is from Maybe An Angel that Paul Geard bought at an Inglis Broodmare sale in foal to Clangalang for which he paid only $900.
