ABOUT 14 months ago Brighton trainer Gary White and his best mate Ron Gudden slipped across to Victoria to attend the Inglis Weanling Sale with the hope of purchasing a filly by Elusive Quality from a mare that had won four races as a two-year-old.

They were successful in their quest to secure the filly but they also acquired a son of Henny Hughes from the Kenny’s Best Pal mare Jamelden, for what Gudden says was “well under the going rate”.

At The TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston on Wednesday night the duo fought out the finish of the Country Club Tasmania 2YO Handicap over 1100 metres with the Henny Hughes gelding Bertie’s Bells scoring by the narrowest of margins over the Elusive Quality filly Modo Vinco.

Both White and Gudden could not get the smile off their faces as the youngsters returned to the unsaddling enclosure.

“It’s quite amazing to think that we got these two horses as weanlings, raised them, got them broken in and prepared for racing and here they are powering up the home straight in Launceston with hardly a breath between them on the line – it’s absolutely amazing.” Gudden said.
