Brighton trainer John Luttrell started the Melbourne Cup Day meeting on a high by snaring the quinella in the opening race on the seven-event card.
Umpire (Rhonda Mangan) powered home down the outside fence to defeat stablemate Our Anna in a photo-finish with race leader Trelew hanging on for third ahead of St Anne.
It made it back-to-back wins for Umpire that has been slowly finding form since arriving from Victoria.
“I was quietly confident Umpire would win again and I can’t believe that bet such a good price ($19),” Luttrell said.
“I was happy to take the overs and he will be hard to beat in whatever he tackles next time.”
“The jockey Mangan was talking about the Hobart Cup with this horse but I think she might be getting a bit ahead of herself,” Luttrell said.
