THE connections of well bred mare Una Dawn will test the four-year-old over longer trips following her last-stride win over Feyfey’s Uncle Max in the Twentieth Century Plumbing Maiden over 1400 metres at Tattersall’s Park today (Sunday Dec 4).

Una Dawn had notched three minor placings from her previous four starts so she deserved to break through but it took her what seemed an eternity to run down the leader today.

With Brendon McCoull in the saddle, Una Dawn settled worse than midfield while Michael Guthrie urged Feyfey’s Uncle Max out of the barrier to ensure he held the lead.

Once in front Feyfey’s Uncle Max set a reasonable pace and he looked good when he kicked clear turning for home.

But when McCoull hit the go button on his charge she looked set to win comfortably but a combination of the leader fighting back and her inability to sprint sharply led to a dour battle over the final 200 metres.

Loft, having its first start in the state for Spreyton trainer Darryl Horner senior worked home well to grab third ahead of Never All Over.
