VICTORIAN mare Vibrant Rouge produced one of the best efforts this season to score a courageous win in the $125,000 Group 3 Vamos Stakes over 1400m in Launceston last night.
Vibrant Rouge settled midfield and traveled well to the home turn but at one stage it looked as if she might struggle to gain a clear run but she managed to find a gap near the rails and once clear she finished powerfully to go on and score narrowly from Tasmanian mare Miss Middleton with another Victorian Nadeem Las a close-up third.
The Glenn Thornton-trained mare was coming off an unplaced run in the Group 3 Bow Mistress in Hobart 12 days ago but with the trainer’s son Daniel Thornton in the saddler the six-year-old mare delivered the knockout blow to her rivals over the concluding stages.
It was clearly her biggest win and her trainer confirmed she will stay in the state and take on The Cleaner in the George Adams late (1600m) next week on Launceston Cup day.
Miss Middleton was again game in defeat with the Barry Campbell-trained mare ending her campaign with seconds in both of the fillies and mares’ Group 3 events.
Another Tasmanian mare Sh’bourne Spirit from the Bill Ryan stable ran on well to finish fourth.
