ROBBIE LAING reject Los Lobos wrote his name into the record books at Devonport today when the lightly raced four-year-old gelding won the opening race on the new synthetic surface at what is now known as Tapeta Park.
Los Lobos, formerly trained by Laing at Cranbourne in Victoria, showed good early speed to lead from a wide gate and once in front jockey Eddie Brennen ensured a solid tempo.
Brennen called on Los Lobos to sprint from the home turn and while he was challenged strongly over the concluding stages he went on to score by 3-1/2 lengths from Luca’s Choice with Jeda’s Quest a close-up third.
While Los Lobos led throughout, the minor placegetters came from well back in the field.
Los Lobos is trained at Devonport by Darryl Horner Snr who said the horse had only arrived in his care earlier in the week.
Her arrived with only seven runs to his credit but had failed to flatter at any of those outings.
