AAMI Hobart Cup winner Hurdy Gurdy Man has overcome the second-last hurdle prior to him attempting to make a clean sweep of Tasmania’s major cups double.
Hurdy Gurdy Man came through his trip to Launceston by plane in the early hours of Thursday morning with a clean bill of health.
His trainer Darren Weir is confident the gallant little stallion can emerge triumphant in the $225,000 Group 3 AAMI Launceston Cup over 2400 metres tomorrow (Wednesday) and earn for his owner and trainer a $50,000 cash bonus for winning both cups courtesy of a sponsorship deal from Tattsbet.
Hurdy Gurdy Man was a convincing winner of the Hobart Cup ahead of local star stayers The Cleaner and Geegees Blackflash in which he carried the minimum weight of 54 kilograms.
The handicapper thought enough of the win to penalize him two kilograms in the Launceston Cup but Weir believes the additional weight is not enough to deny the stallion victory.
Weir also has in-form sprinter-miler Lord Of Brazil engaged in the Listed $100,000 weight-for-age George Adams Plate over 1600 metres and the trainer believes it is not beyond the realms of possibility of him snaring the feature race double.
