WHEN prominent Tasmanian thoroughbred owners David and Louise Adams purchased Smart Catch at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne this year they were content that they had bought a filly that could develop into a nice three-year-old.
The filly made her way into the Gary White stable at Brighton where all of the Adams’ horses reside with no thoughts of the filly racing at two.
But after Smart Catch (Elusive Quality-She’s Academic x Royal Academy) scored an impressive win in the DJ Motors 2YO Maiden Plate over 1000 metres at Tattersall’s Park today (Sunday Dec 4) it looks as if they may have a handy 2YO in their midst.
With Victorian-based rider Holly McKechnie in the saddle, Smart Catch began brilliantly from an inside gate to land in front and despite being pressured for the first 400 metres the filly let down well in the home straight and went on to score comfortably from stablemate Modo Vinco (Kelvin Sanderson) with Bachelor’s babe (Jacques Luxe) a distant third.
Only four contested the race after Augers Well failed to load and Chinese Medicine twice became fractious in the barriers, the second time bad enough for stewards to demand her withdrawal.
