Well-bred juvenile filly Gee Gee Josie gave her prominent owners Paul and Elizabeth Geard their first two-year-old feature win in two years when she powered home along the rails to win the $30,000 Alexandra Plate over 1120 metres in Launceston last night.

Gee Gee Josie settled handy to the leaders and travelled well to the home turn but was left a bit flat-footed when first-starter Vivilici forged to the lead and looked home when she kicked two lengths clear.

But under strong riding from Siggy Carr, Gee Gee Josie kept plugging away and with the advantage of already having had a start she edged out Vivilici that was game in defeat, with the favourite Le Cadeau over a length away in third.

“I was thrilled with the filly’s effort to fight back like she did and hopefully she can go to the next level later in the season,” Gandy said.

“If she remains happy and sound we will send her to the Alfa Bowl and then hopefully onto the Listed Elwick Stakes.”

Gee Gee Josie (Wordsmith-Josie’s Double) is a full sister to the well-performed Geegees Doublejay and outstanding juvenile Gee Gee Double Dee that won the first four of five starts at two, including the 2016 $100,000 Listed Elwick Stakes..

Gee Gee Josie was fourth on debut in the first two-year-old race of the season and that experience paid big dividends at the business end of the race.

“Race experience is invaluable with two-year-olds and I’m sure it gave this filly an advantage over the first-starters on Wednesday night,” said Gandy.

Vivilici (Needs Further-Why For) is a full sister to the well-performed Speed Force and she would only need to deliver a mirror effort to be hard to beat at her next outing.

Le Cadeau was interfered with shortly after jumping, and subsequently gave away too big a start, while first-starter Gee Gee Can Win was doing his best work over the concluding stages to finish fourth.
