QUALITY mare Devon Lass faces one of her toughest tests in Launceston tomorrow night where she will step up to 2100 metres for the first time in what looks a very competitive benchmark 78 race.

Devon Lass has been racing in great form of late with a win two starts back on her home track at Tapeta Park Spreyton (1650m) and last Wednesday night she was a game second, beaten a nose, to the highly promising Banca Mo in a benchmark 78 over 1600 metres.

The Leon Wells-trained five-year-old mare won on Devonport Cup Day to give her connections plenty to smile about and while she failed to place at her subsequent three outings she has bounced back with a vengeance at her past two.

Wells is upbeat about the mare’s chances of winning tomorrow night.

The in-form Wallis (1) and emerging stayer Temajim (2) loom as the main contenders in the race and former Queenslander Lonaro also warrants respect, especially with the services of the state’s reigning premier jockey Brendon McCoull who partners the gelding for the first time.
