TALENTED two-year-old Western Hero has been competitive in all of the classic races this season and at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday his trainer Terry Evans is hoping the Autumn Classic can be the gelding’s second feature race triumph.

Western Hero has not started since finishing fourth to the Anthony Freedman-trained Cheyenne Warrior in the $100,000 Gold Sovereign Stakes that followed minor placings in the Magic Millions Classic and the $100,000 Elwick Stakes.

Evans said Western Hero has been progressing nicely and while he expects the gelded son of West Quest-Horkins Nancy to be very competitive on Sunday he admitted the main mission is the Sires Produce Stakes over 1400 metres in Launceston next month

Western Hero has won two of his six starts, including the $25,000 Alexandra Plate and both were over the short course of 900 metres on the course proper at Tattersall’s Park.

While Western hero goes into Sunday’s assignment as the most experienced of the eight final acceptors, there are others that have shown decent form that suggests it could be an open race.

Zada Princess, from the Mark Ganderton stable, was impressive in wining at her only start at Tapeta Park Spreyton two weeks ago and should she take that form into this race then she will be very hard to beat.

The David and Scott Brunton-stable will be represented by What Life Brings and Our Clangalang with What A Life likely to be their best winning chance.

What A Life was placed third behind Keep The Cash at his only start in Launceston almost three weeks ago where he hit the line strongly.

Summer Downs has had only two starts for Royston Carr but his latest was encouraging when a fast-finishing second to Keep The Cash on March 28.

Al’s Birthday is a first-starter from the Stephen Lockhart stable that caught the eye with a trial win in Hobart a month ago and could show up on debut.
