BRIGHTON trainer Gary White was more than pleased with the winning performance of Gathering Gold at Spreyton on Sunday and capped a successful day off with a double when What A Life won her second race for the season earlier in the day.

Gathering Gold (Erhan Kacmaz) was resuming from a 10 month break from competitive racing, however she was trained to the minute and produced a powerful finish to record a narrow but convincing win in the Benchmark 0-68 Handicap (1150m).

Gathering Gold was given little chance of ever racing again after losing two thirds of her hoof capsule during the winter last year. White and the owners of the mare have shown plenty of patience during her recovery and are happy with the way the versatile mare has pulled-up.

“For her to do what she did on Sunday was remarkable,” White said.

“It’s been a huge effort by all concerned including all of my staff and the our veterinarian. We thought she would never race again, but it’s been a great boost for her connections, especially Greg Gordon who hasn’t been in the best of health of late. I think all the owners enjoyed this win because it was pretty special.”

White is likely to start Gathering Gold in a 0-78 Handicap at Spreyton on June 17.

What A Life (Bulent Muhcu) was sent out at juicy odds in the combined Maiden and Class One (1880m) at Spreyton and looked good in coming from behind for a solid win on the Tapeta surface.

“She’s really come through the race in good order and she will contest a 2100m race at Mowbray on Sunday week,” White said.

“She jumped better than ever before and travelled well throughout the race. She deserved the win.”

Sunday’s double for the White stable has taken his tally to 26.5 wins for the season and sits third in the trainers premiership behind Leon Wells (31), while David and Scott Brunton (60.5) have a unassailable lead in the title 29.5 wins clear with 10 meetings remaining in the season.
