TASMANIA’S apprentices were given a taste of what life is like in the fast lane when internationally acclaimed and multiple Group 1-winning jockey Craig Williams spent the day with them as part of a coaching program at UBET Racing Centre in Launceston today.
Williams was invited to spend the day with Tasmania’s 11 apprentices as part of a Tasracing initiative that is aimed at offering the state’s young riders mentoring sessions with experienced and highly professional industry participants.
What these young riders received with Williams was an insight into life at the elite level and what is required to own and retain a reputation as one of Australia’s best jockeys.
Williams spoke about how he began his career and described the highs and lows of his riding life but emphasised how focusing on the positives and not overreacting to the negatives has ensured his stay at the top of the jockey tree.
Williams is the consummate professional and much of the advice he passed on during the four-hour session should have given them encouragement as they make their way in what is a tough but rewarding profession.
“I’m always delighted to give back my time to racing especially when it is to help our riders of the future,” Williams said.
“I am in my position now because certain people gave me help along the way so I return the favour whenever I can,” he said.
Tasracing’s code development manager Simon Stout said Williams is the ideal mentor.
“We thought it was poignant to secure an elite rider who could help our young riders make a connection between what they have already achieved and what they can achieve in the future,” Stout said.
“Craig is famous for his preparation for race rides and for the way he goes about his business and we were delighted when he accepted our offer to come to Tasmania,” Stout said.
Williams is focused on winning this season’s Victorian metropolitan jockey’s premiership in which he is equal second with Damien Oliver whom are two off the leader Dwayne Dunn who will miss the last three meetings through suspension.
