SPEEDY four-year-old mare Wonzzee booked a berth in next month’s $150,000 Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy with an emphatic win in a class four handicap over 1200 metres at The TOTE Racing centre in Launceston last night.
Wonzzee delivered her customary front running catch-me-if-you-can tactics against strong opposition to emerge triumphant over Triple Bee and Bideford.
The Tegan Keys-trained mare took her career win tally to four from only five starts and did enough to convince her trainer that she would be p to tackling the state’s best sprint race for fillies and mares.
“This win was probably her best and we needed to win to seriously consider heading her to the Bow Mistress,” Keys said.
“She had to do it tough tonight but she was up to it. She is a very exciting mare,” she said.
Wonzzee was ridden by David Pires who was upbeat about the mare’s immediate future.
“That was definitely her best win because she had to tough and courageous at the business end of the race and she really delivered,” Pires said.
“On that run you would think she is going to be competitive in whatever she tackles next,” he said.
Wonzzee drew barrier one that enabled Pires to lead and dictate the pace but she was worried from the outset by Bideford that raced on her outside and headed her turning for home.
But under strong riding from Pires the mare regained the lead and slipped clear and had no trouble staving off a lat bid from Triple Bee.
