THOROUGHBRED trainer Stuart Gandy may have only a small team in work by comparison to other full-time trainers but what the horses in the boxes at Brighton at present are delivering winners with monotonous regularity.

He prepared a double that included a quinella in one race in Launceston last Wednesday week and he saddled up Incumblonde to win in Hobart on Melbourne Cup day.

He went to Launceston the following night and prepared Geegees Soprano to score an impressive win in a maiden over 1200m.

Gandy attributes his success this season to being kind to his team of two-year-olds last season.

“We never over raced our two-year-olds last season and most of those are by Wordsmith and he is proving to be a brilliant sire,” Gandy said.

Wordsmith is owned by Paul and Elizabeth Geard who are the leading owners in Tasmania winning 45 races last season with nine coming from Wordsmith’s first crop to race.

Wordsmith has already produced an impressive two-year-old winner in Geegees Double Jay, prepared by Gandy, with three more waiting in the wings that show promise.

Wordsmith has produced five individual winners so far this season with four from Gandy’s stable and one, Geegees Velvet, from the strong John Luttrell yard at Brighton.

“Everything is going well at the moment and hopefully it will keep going.”

After Geegees Soprano’s win in Launceston last Wednesday Gandy was keen to heap praise on the people who work with him at Brighton.

“You don’t have success without help and I am very lucky to have a very good team working with me at Brighton and at the farm (Gee Gee Horse Stud),” he said.
