BURNIE greyhound trainer Ben Englund has only been training for three years but he has already developed the secret to winning feature races.
AT UBET Park Hobart last night Englund’s smart pup Wynburn Witness made it a clean sweep of the HGRC Breeders Classic series when she produced a courageous performance to emerge triumphant in the last few strides.
Wynburn Witness and eventual runner-up Joker Jones suffered sever interference at the start when Belluci in box two tried to head straight to the outside and that led to those on her outside being checked .
This left Supreme It Seems (box one) to gain a clear run and lead to the top turn but when he was crossed and checked by the winner’s kennel mate and litter brother Wynburn Warrant it produced a domino effect but this time Joker Jones and Wynburn Witness avoided the trouble.
Joker Jones showed brilliant track sense to weave his way to the front and looked to have a winning break of three lengths turning for home and was still a couple clear 80 metres out.
But Wynburn Witness showed an incredible will to win and grabbed victory in the shadows of the post.
“Tonight’s win was clearly her best because she copped a bad check at the start and then had to find a way to win,” Englund said.
“I thought it was very courageous they way she kept trying over the last bit to get up on the line.”
“I am very proud of the way she tried so hard to win tonight and given what happened at the start and where she was turning for home I’d say it was clearly her best effort,” he said.
It was Englund’s second Breeders Classic victory having been successful with Wynburn Rush earlier this year.
Joker Jones lost no admirers as his run was every bit as good as the winner and Belluci also is a very talented pup that is likely to improve with racing.
Ted Medhurst’s pair of Local View (5) and Miss Stylist (6) had no luck but Miss Stylist flashed home to finish on the heels of the minor placegetter.
