WELL bred pup Zorro’s Legacy looks set for a bright future given the ease with which he dispensed with his rivals in the final of the HGRC Breeders Classic over 461 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last night (Thursday). Despite being beaten in his semi-final, punters rallied for the Ted Medhurst-trained dog to send him around the $2.30 favourite. Zorro’s Legacy began well from box seven and after a tussle with Director he crossed to the rail and once on the bunny the end result was never in doubt. Zorro’s Legacy (Bombastic Shiraz-Fallen Zorro) powered his way to the line to score by eight lengths from Director with Pak and Wrap a neck away third. It was an effortless and emphatic win with the son of Bombastic Shiraz stopping the clock at 26.04s which was the best of the night but it came as no surprise to the trainer “He’s shown something from day one and he’s been very competitive,” Medhurst said. “He has consistently run times of just over 26 seconds and that’s pretty good for an inexperienced pup,” he said. Zorro’s Legacy was bred by his part-owner Colin Garity from his star stayer Fallen Zorro and the pup reared by prominent breeder Barry Heawood who also part-owns Zorro’s Legacy. “Barry Heawood reared this pup and then he was sent over to Victoria to be broken in by Jimmy Auld who has got to be the best breaker in Australia.” “Jimmy said this dog was above average and he’s been proven right,” he said. Medhurst said he won’t push the dog too hard. “I’ll have a look at the calendar and see if there are any more aged races for him because he is still a very immature dog.” “I just want to look after him until he matures more,” he said. Zorro’s Legacy has started 13 times for six wins and four minor placings with this latest win taking his stake earnings to beyond $13,000. While Zorro’s Legacy was impressive. Director stuck to his task well and Pak And Wrap also tried hard at the business end of the race. The minor placegetters are owned by Karlene Cuthbertson and Sally-Anne Wilson who had six of the eight finalists. It just goes to prove you only have to have one in the race to win the prize.
